The looking comes first

Look beyond the subject.

When you want to know how to improve your painting, it helps to name what you are looking at. The Atelier considers the visible choices that hold a picture together.

Inside a reading

Something to take back to the easel.

The painting critique follows five parts. Here is what each covers.

You can add a note before sending your painting: what feels unresolved, or what you would like looked at.

  1. What is working

The reading starts with something genuinely succeeding in your painting, and why it works. That comes before any suggestion, so you can consider what to keep as well as what to change.

  2. Things you might try

Observations become options to explore, phrased as possibilities rather than corrections. You choose which direction belongs to the work. You are free to disagree with the reading.

  3. Presentation

A short consideration of scale, framing and how the painting would hang. If you are thinking about how to frame a painting, this part brings its life on a wall into the conversation.

  4. A suggested thread

One of The Art Sutra’s eight intentions, with a one-line reason for the choice. It considers which thread suits the work; you can explore all eight below.

  5. One gentle next step

The reading closes with one concrete suggestion you could try next. Take it back to the easel, consider it alongside your own intention, and decide whether to act on it.

Private enough for unfinished work.

No scores, grades, ranks or comparisons with famous artists. Nothing is published. The Art Sutra does not store your image; it is sent to an external AI model to be read.

This is AI art critique in a mentor’s voice. The observations come from a model, and you decide what is useful. Sending a painting here does not list it for sale.

Its thread

Eight ways to think about presence.

Explore the intentions behind the suggested thread, from the quiet of a room to the energy it holds.

For the artist making the next decision.

Use it when you want composition feedback on a work in progress, or a fresh look at a finished painting before considering its presentation. Access belongs to verified artists on The Art Sutra.

Before you bring a painting.

Is the Atelier free for verified artists?

Yes. The Atelier is free for Art Sutra artists whose identity has been verified. Readings depend on available AI capacity; if the studio is busy, you may need to try again later.

Who can use the Atelier?

You need to be signed in as an Art Sutra artist with verified identity. Creating a general account or having an artist application approved does not, on its own, open the tool.

Is my painting image stored or published?

The Art Sutra does not store the image you send to the Atelier or publish it as a listing. The image is sent to an external AI model to be read. This is separate from uploading work to your public gallery.

Can I send an unfinished painting?

Yes. Send a finished piece or a work still on the easel. You can add an optional note about what you would like looked at. A photograph in daylight, taken square to the canvas, helps show the work clearly.

Is this a person’s critique or an AI reading?

It is an AI reading, written in a mentor’s voice. A person does not read your painting through this tool. Treat the response as a second opinion that you can question, rather than a verdict on your ability.

What is a thread?

A thread is one of the eight intentions used to browse art on The Art Sutra. The Atelier suggests an intention for your painting and gives a short reason. It is a way to think about the work’s presence in a room.

How do I get access?

Apply to sell your art. After approval, complete your artist account setup and verify your identity in your studio. Once identity verification is complete, the Atelier opens there. Existing verified artists can sign in and go straight to it.
